Ilyse Hogue joins Rewiring America

Former NARAL Pro-Choice America president joins movement to electrify American homes and communities.

Washington, DC, Wednesday, July 12, 2023 — Former NARAL Pro-Choice America president Ilyse Hogue has joined Rewiring America, the nation’s leading nonprofit working to electrify our homes, businesses, and communities.

During the eight years Hogue led NARAL, the legacy women’s health rights organization tripled its budget, expanded its on-the-ground mobilizing into four new states, and expanded its membership from half a million to 2.5 million Americans across 50 states.

Hogue joins Rewiring America as Senior Advisor and will help lead strategy on work with the bicameral Congressional Electrification Caucus, state and local policymakers, and movement partners including labor, climate, environmental justice, and others. She will also help Rewiring America test and design consumer content and distribution strategies with partners on the ground and online, to help increase awareness of and demand for home and community electrification.

“Ilyse Hogue is a proven movement builder who knows how to use tools and technology to accelerate progress and break barriers,” said Ari Matusiak, Rewiring America co-founder and CEO. “National leaders like Ilyse Hogue and Stacey Abrams are joining the movement to electrify everything because they see these climate and health solutions inspiring optimism and economic empowerment for millions of Americans.”

“In a sense, I am coming full circle: my master’s degree is in ecology, and I studied the impact of resource constraints on politics and culture,” said Ilyse Hogue. “Rewiring America believes in abundance. Americans are adopting the clean energy machines that will eliminate 42 percent of our carbon emissions because these appliances will make their lives better, healthier, and more affordable. And make their communities more liveable and resilient. I believe in electrification and I think Americans will embrace it, using the billions of dollars the Inflation Reduction Act makes available to them.”

Hogue is a partner at Purpose, a social impact agency that uses storytelling and mobilization to drive change. In 2020, she co-authored a best-selling book, The Lie That Binds, with former NARAL Research Director Ellie Langford, on the history of the radical right, its authoritarian aims, and its reliance on white supremacy, misogyny, and disinformation. Prior to her work for NARAL, Hogue worked for MoveOn.org, Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network, Media Matters for America, and the Friends of Democracy PAC.
