Homeowners across the country celebrate clean electric home upgrades made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act

For the second anniversary of the landmark law, American homeowners are hosting “front porch ribbon cuttings” to showcase new heat pumps, EV chargers, and other clean electric machines

WASHINGTON DC — Starting today, homeowners across the country will begin hosting “front porch ribbon cuttings” to bring attention to clean electric machines they’ve purchased because of tax incentives made available by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

August marks the second anniversary of the landmark climate law, which made billions of dollars worth of tax credits available for American homeowners to purchase heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, electric cars and chargers, as well as to help cover energy audits and home weatherization work.

These “ribbon cutting” events are meant to celebrate individual homeowner actions with the same pomp and circumstance a new battery factory or a utility scale solar array gets upon opening.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Treasury released data on IRA tax credit uptake that shows 3.4 million Americans took advantage of the credits in 2023 — more than double the federal government’s early projections. The credits for rooftop solar and heat pump water heaters also matched Rewiring America's "Electric Potential" benchmark — the incentive uptake expected if we are to meet our climate goals by 2050.

“Two years after the passage of this landmark law the receipts are in: the Inflation Reduction Act is working and helping Americans save on their energy bills,” said Ari Matusiak, CEO and cofounder of Rewiring America. “What we’re seeing is that if policies are designed to help Americans' pocketbooks, they will succeed, and we should celebrate them just like we celebrate jobs and economic impact on communities. We’re grateful to everyone who is opening their homes to the public to tell their success stories and the story of the IRA’s ongoing nationwide impact.”

The events happening this week are made possible by Rewiring America and numerous climate advocacy groups, including Citizens’ Climate Lobby, Climate Power, and the League of Conservation Voters, among other local groups. Below is the event schedule:
